About Jan Phillips

Summer Breeze Stables in Milton is the fulfilment of one horsewoman’s dream. Jan remembers that as a child she’d “straddle her grandmother’s chicken coop, or grab a broom and run around with it, pretending I was riding a horse.” Her first riding lessons came in trade for cleaning stalls at a nearby stable. When she was twelve years old, she bought a horse for two hundred dollars, money she had saved from after-school work and Christmas gifts. As Jan explains, “because the horse came with a bridle but no saddle, I rode bareback until I could buy one.”

After graduating from Mountoursville Area High school in 1972, Jan travelled to England to train at the renowned Porlock Vale Equestrian Centre, where she earned her Horse Masters and became a Certified Instructor, qualified in equitation, stable management, and minor-injury care.

Jan and her husband Harry moved to the current location of Summer Breeze Stables in 1973, “when there was nothing here but forty-nine acres of corn-fields.” They opened the business in 1976 with just four stalls. Over time, they grew the business into a stable with 32 stalls, an outdoor arena, a full-size, lighted indoor arena with a heated viewing lounge, a heated washbay, and acres of turnout pastures. While Jan and Harry were growing the business, they lived in a mobile home in the field next to those first four stalls. Eventually they build a house, also on-site, all along providing 24-hour-care for their equine charges.

Jan’s many accomplishments include the training of numerous A-circuit champion riders and horses and 4-H State Champions, a Grand Junior Hunter Zone II Champion, and multiple grand and reserve champions within the Central Pennsylvania Hunter Circuit. Always interested in learning more and setting new goals for herself, in March 2015 Jan earned a new certification from the United States Hunter Jumper Association.
